Seiko’s Spring Drive movement is a technical marvel in itself, offering precision of 0.5 seconds per day by combining a traditional mechanical regulating organ with the high-precision of quartz to regulate the mechanical heart beat. Using a reference signal from a high-frequency quartz oscillator and a tiny integrated circuit powered by electricity generated from the residual motion of the winding rotor.

The 8-day power reserve calibre 9R01 is the first Spring Drive movement to be created at the Micro Artist Studio in Shio-jiri. Three barrels are used to ensure the 196-hour power reserve, as well as a one-piece bridge to ensure precise positioning of the gear wheels and maximum efficiency for the power train. This unusual design means that only the rubues and blued screws, as well as the all-important 8-day power reserve gauge, are visible through the sapphire crystal case back.

Introduced at Baselworld 2016 with a platinum 950 case polished to a mirror finish using Seiko’s Zaratsu technique that was specially developed for this model, the first model in the collection had a wonderful “diamond dust” dial, whose tiny crystals glistened in the reflection of light to complement the cool colour of the platinum. Seiko now presents a rich and warmer version with an 18-carat red-gold case and a stardust dial. This dial combines plating and painting to create a deep black background against which the crystals sparkle light stars in the night sky.

The new Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Power Reserve in red gold is one of the first models launched since Seiko announced earlier this year that Grand Seiko would henceforth be operated as an independent brand with its own dedicated stores. The price of entry doesn’t come cheap, however, with this new model costing €52,800.
