Following the success of last year’s one-off Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special, which was created to celebrate our 15th anniversary, this year WorldTempus is offering a new Zenith Pilot as part of its latest “unique pieces” operation. In shades of blue, with a smaller 40 mm diameter case, this watch belongs to the brand-new Pilot Type 20 Extra Special collection unveiled at this year’s Baselworld, and it looks equally good on a man’s or a woman’s wrist.
Pilots’ watches are big this year, and vintage styling represents an additional attraction for historically-inspired timepieces associated with the heroes of aviation and their conquest of the skies. The one-off Pilot Type 20 Extra Special 40 mm offered by WorldTempus marries technical modernity with a vintage spirit. It has many features inspired by old Zenith aviators’ watches: oversized Arabic numerals and faceted hands coated with vintage beige SuperLuminova, easily readable against the fine-grained dial, along with a generous fluted crown and contrasting overstitching on the strap. To complement these historical features, Zenith has opted for an aged steel case (water resistant to 100 m) topped with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a closed caseback engraved with the date Zenith was founded (1865) and the Le Locle manufacture’s period logo of the starred shield. A keen eye will spot the exclusive detail that makes this watch a one-off: the figure 16 at 12 o’clock.

The mechanical heart of the watch is nevertheless unapologetically modern. It beats at the 28,800 vph cadence of the Elite 679 automatic calibre, which provides a 50-hour power reserve for the hours, minutes and seconds functions. The rotor is decorated with Geneva striping. The soft blue nubuck strap is lined with rubber and enhanced with bold white topstitching..
