A Link IN TIME. To celebrate its 30th birthday, TAG Heuer’s Hyperlink collection returns with a new appear, far more noticeably a bigger diameter.

Back in 2015, TAG Heuer unveiled the Carrera 01, setting a whole new direction for the famous line of racing chronographs. The Carrera Heuer-01 is big, it’s a little brash, and instead of having a streamlined black-and-white look it shows off the movement though a mostly transparent dial. But today TAG is offering an evolution of the Heuer-01, sizing it down to an ever-so-slightly-more-modest 43mm.

When that first Heuer-01 was first shown, it definitely startled some people. Very little was there to remind vintage enthusiasts of the classic 60s and 70s Carreras, and it was even a pretty big departure from the other current Carreras such as the 1887 models. Our technical editor Nicholas Manousos spoke with TAG Heuer just a few months after the watch’s debut to dig deep into the details of just what exactly makes the Heuer 01 so different and special, and I recommend you take a look back at that for more. But, one important thing to note is the price positioning of the Heuer-01 – at launch it retailed for under 5,000 CHF ($5,450 at launch in the U.S.) and was intended to be a high-value offering.

The new watches we have here today are very much Heuer-01 chronographs. They still have the 12-part modular case (which allows TAG to create many variations while still creating components at scale), they still have the polished ceramic tachymeter bezels, and they still, of course, have the caliber Heuer 01 movement inside. None of that is changing. What has changed though is the size. The original Carrera Heuer-01 watches are 45mm, and the other updates to the line so far have retained that size. These new watches are a slightly smaller 43mm, which I genuinely think will make them wearable to a whole new audience.

There’s no question that 43mm is still very big – these aren’t shrinking violets – but it’s at least something approachable to a larger swath of the population. I know many fans of large watches who still can’t stomach a 45mm case. That said, these are additions to the collection and the 45mm models aren’t going anywhere (which means they’re probably still selling well and I’m just crazy).

In total, there are six new models. There is a blue dial version with either a steel bracelet or a blue leather strap, a brown dial version with either a steel bracelet or a brown leather strap, and a black dial version with either a steel bracelet or a black rubber strap. All three colors have matching ceramic bezels and bright red accents and chronograph hands. One of the reasons for the large, 45mm- case in the original models was to offer lots of space to view the skeletonized movement, and there’ still plenty of room to do so in these new 43mm Carreras.
