Chopard L.U.C 8HF launched in 2012, when it was the world’s first COSC-certified high-frequency watch. and they presented a new model – 8HF Power Control.The Chopard L.U.C 8HF Power Control is a limited edition of only 250 pieces.
At the core of the Power Control is the automatic caliber 01.09-L, which features a balance beating at an insane 8 Hz – that’s 57,600 vph. That’s twice the speed of most standard movements these days. It’s extremely difficult to build a movement like this, to manage the power output, and to regulate the movement once it’s assembled, but it is worth the effort when it comes to accuracy. The higher beat rate makes the balance less susceptible to the negative effects of gravity, shocks, and other hazards of daily wear. The movement here is a COSC-certified chronometer.
What sets the Power Control apart from the first 8HF is the combination black DLC titanium and monobloc matte-black ceramic case. The main case is DLC titanium, making it lightweight, while the bezel, caseback, and crown are all matte ceramic. The shape is a bit unusual, but the construction method means that the lines are extremely clean and the curve of the monoblock caseback very soft. It feels really great on the wrist, with just enough heft. There is a small window on the caseback that lets you get a glimpse of the balance too, a nice touch on a watch like this.
At 42mm across and 11.20mm thick, the Chopard 8HF Power Control is also a watch that can bridge casual and dressier settings. The dial is relatively straightforward, with two central hands in the typical L.U.C shape filled with luminous material. A small seconds register partially covers the long date window down at 6 o’clock, and an indicator for the 60-hour power reserve sits up at 10 o’clock.
