It was only a week ago that we introduced you to the Luminor Marina 8 Days Acciaio, which features in in-house movement that can hold more than a week of power. Here Panerai ups the ante with two additional days of power reserve and a GMT complication in the same robust 44mm Luminor case. If you’re looking for a combination of classic Panerai looks with some extra horological muscle, the PAM 533 is worth a closer look.
Panerai’s most iconic watches might be time-only, but the brand has been doing complications for a long time. The PAM 533 maintains much of the legibility and cleanliness of the time-only Panerais, but with the addition of a second timezone and a power reserve indicator. That indicator is linear and sits just above six o’clock, showing off the long 10-day reserve. The date window is unobtrusive and the extra hour hand for the GMT function has a luminous tip for reading in the dark.
The PAM 533 also has two other subtle features that add functionality. The first is the ability to adjust the hour hand in jumping one-hour increments via the crown when adjusting to a new timezone (leaving the GMT on home time). The second is an am/pm indicator nested in the running second’s indicator at 9 o’clock.
Powering the PAM 533 is the P.2003 caliber, the first entirely in-house automatic movement from Panerai’s new Neuchatel manufacture. The 10 days of power (240 hours, in case you were wondering) is stored in three barrels, something extremely unusual on an automatic watch. The caliber itself is 8mm thick and has 296 components, 25 of which are jewels. This is another example of Panerai’s admirable push to take its movements in-house over the last few years. Just because these are sport watches doesn’t mean they should house stock movements.
On the wrist the PAM 533 is admittedly large, but Panerai has never shied away from that. In fact, we’d be surprised if it was anything but beefy. However, the case shape sits nicely on the wrist and the large dial is extremely legible and good looking. If you’re ok with bigger watches, you’ll have no complaints about the profile.
